The wintering ecology of White-fronted Geese Anser albifrons was investigated in paddy fields in northeast of Lake Izunuma, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, for 7 days, 8-25 February 1996. Because there is a proposal to construct a road through the center of the study area, it is important to assess the affect of road construction for geese. The daily movements of geese between roost sites and the foraging areas, and the habitat use pattern of geese at the area were recorded. All geese observed in the study area was monitored from 8 points (study sites) from before sunrise till after sunset by 8 observers with radio transceivers. During the study in every morning, all geese flew from their roosts in Lake Izunuma, flew over the study area, and went to a paddy field which lays beyond. These geese used 5 routes from 2 roost sites. One of 5 routes headed north from a roost in the center of the lake. The other 4 routes started from the roost in the east part of the lake. Two routes were most frequently used by geese: the first was a route from the roost in the center of the lake to north, and the second was a route from the roost in the east to northeast. Every evening, geese returned to the 2 roosts by the same 5 routes. However, the number of geese which used each route differed from that of the morning, and total numbers in the morning were greater than those in the evening. From around 09:00 till 11:00, some geese moved to the study area from the northeast paddy fields beyond. The foraging rate of geese was significantly positively correlated with the frequency of a south (*s= 0.82) and southeast wind (*s=0.87), and the resting rate a north (*s=0.79) and northwest (*s=0.88). Geese concentrated at the southern 5 sites in the study area (I * =12.66> 1 ). The number of foraging geese was significantly more than that of resting at each site (*<0.001), and the number of geese in paddy fields without tillage was significantly more than those with tillage in the study area (*<0.001).
