There are few reports of woodpeckers foraging for, that is, preying upon, vertebrates. Picinae species forage mainly on arthropods and to some xtent on seeds and fruits, except the Red-headed Woodpecker Melanerpes erythrocephalus ndthe Greater Yellow-nape Picus flavinucha, whi may with some frequency prey upon vertebrates such as bird eggs and chicks, or frogs (SHORT 1982, CRAMP et al. 1985). Some observations i dicate the Great Spotted Woodpecker sometimes preys upon various bird eggs and nestlings in the cavity and ground nests, and "a small rodent", and other vertebrates (PRRRINS 1979, CRAMP et al. 1985). There is only one report on carnivorousness of Japanese woodpeckers (KINJYO et al. 1988, Okinawan Woodpecker Sapheopipo noguchii, and a gecko, probably Gekko japonicas, toa nestling). It is reported that Great Spotted Woodpeckers in Japan forage arthropods, eeds and fruits, and that Japanese Pygmy Woodpeckers do arthropods and fruits little (CHIBA 1969, KIYOSU 1980, ISHIDA 1983). Here we report two other observations of lizard eating by these two species. A male Great Spotted Woodpecker in captivity caught a juvenile izard, Takydromus tachydromoides, on the ground, climbed a log up to 2.7m, struck, handled (including by "wedging" (SHORT 1982; p. 283, Ishida 1991) and fed it.
