Rats with bilateral lesions of the caudate nucleus were impaired in a T-maze task requiring them to go toward a light, but not away from a light. The deficit was due to a perseveration of responses to one side of the maze. No correlation was found between the side preferred or reinforced preoperatively and the side preferred during postoperative perseveration.
