This experiment examined the effects of electrical stimulation in the fastigial nucleus (FN) of the cerebellum on behavior, arterial pressure (AP), and heart rate (HR) in freely moving dogs. Aseptic surgical procedures were used to chronically implant FN electrodes and cardiovascular instrumentation in dogs. Bipolar and monopolar electrodes were implanted in rostral FN sites from which the greatest increase in AP and HR were obtained. Analysis of the behavioral data indicated there was a significant interaction between intensity of stimulation and behavior. FN produced changes in the frequency of eating behavior and uncoordinated activity. FN stimulation resulted in increases in AP and HR, which were accompanied by sniffing, walking around the room, tail wagging, approaching or positioning with reference to experimenter, and decreases in AP and HR for arousal/activity level and orienting. The data suggest that the FN contains the anatomical and functional pathways of excitation for the cardiovascular pressor response and behavior.
