人工前庭器開発の背景―各半規管の個別刺激― 人工前庭器開発の基礎となる研究の歴史は Bernard Cohenと Jun-Ichi Suzukiらによる各半 規管の個別刺激にさかのぼる。彼らはネコなどを 対象として前・外側・後半規管それぞれの膨大部 神経を個別にあるいは組み合わせて電気刺激しな がら眼球運動を観察し,半規管の個別刺激に対す る眼球運動の軸が被刺激半規管の属する平面に対 して垂直になることを証明した。のちに訪れる 平衡医学の発展に大きく寄与した画期的な研究で あった。測定精度が高まった現在では,単純に各 半規管の膨大部を個別に電気刺激しても,厳密な 意味で該当半規管由来の眼球運動のみを惹起する ことは困難であることが判明している。これは人 工前庭器開発において解決すべき問題のひとつと なっているが,彼らの研究が色褪せることはな い。2011年の ARO学会においても,Cohenは共 同研究者である Suzukiについての談話を交えな がら,半規管の個別刺激と眼球運動について語っ ていた。
