Off the coast of Cape Toi, Miyazaki, Japan (31°21′N 131°19′E), thousands of colonies of the tabular coral species Acropora hyacinthus densely inhabits an area of approximately 300×300 m at depths of 3-5 m (Fig. 1A). This coral community was discovered in March 2012 by one of the co-authors (M. Fukuda) and is believed to be one of the largest communities of A. hyacinthus off the coast of Kyushu. In southern Miyazaki, reef-building corals had been found in abundance before the outbreak of the coral-eating snails Drupella fragum in 1987, which drastically diminished the coral population in this region (Takayama and Shirasaki 1990; Uchida 1994). Therefore, rediscovery of the coral community in southern Miyazaki Drupella outbreak in a large coral community off the coast of Cape Toi, Miyazaki, Japan
