紫外線ランプの周りに二酸化チタンのコーティングをほどこした粒状の多孔質光触媒を配した円筒状の反応器を用いて, 下水処理施設の最初沈殿水処理システムの検討を行った。硝化細菌 (アンモニア酸化菌+亜硝酸酸化菌) を反応槽に投入し, 最初沈殿水中のPOC, DOC, NH4+, NO2-, およびNO3-濃度の経時変化の測定を行なった。多孔質光触媒がPOCの捕捉およびDOCの吸着と分解の効果を示すという結果が得られた。また, この反応槽内でNH4+がNO3-まで硝化されており, 反応槽内の一部に紫外線の照射があっても光触媒反応器の内部または外部で硝化細菌が活動できることが示された。さらに, 光触媒反応器の導入により, 硝化細菌のみの場合よりも硝化反応が促進されることが示された。反応槽内の光触媒反応器を倍加すると, 硝化速度が増加した。しかし, POC, DOCは光触媒反応器の設置数にあまり影響を受けなかった。
