Timm (1951) originally described Deontostoma magnificum (Timm, 1951) Platonova, 1962 in the genus Thoracostoma Marion, 1870, based on specimens from Alaska. Platonova (1962) transferred this species to Deontostoma Filipjev, 1916, mainly due to the absence of the tropes. Hope (1967) redescribed D. magnificum based on the type series and new specimens, and modified the species definition. During a 2012 survey of the marine benthos at Kanagawa, central Japan, we collected large nematode specimens which we identif ied as D. magnificum. This is the first record of any Deontostoma species from Japanese waters.
