Pratylenchus penetrans Cobb is one of the most important plant-parasitic nematodes in Japan and causes severe damage to vegetables, which reduces crop quality and hence marketability. Vegetable crops affected by this nematode include the Japanese radish (Raphanus sativus L. var. longipinnatus) (Chikaoka et al., 1971), carrot (Daucus carota L.) (Hagiya et al., 1982), and edible burdock (Arctium lappa L.) (Kajino, 1986). Organic soil supplements have long been utilized to control nematode damage (Nakasono, 1992). As a result, many studies have focused on evaluating how organic soil supplements suppress the effects of parasitic nematodes, including P. penetrans (Nakasono, 1992; Ohbayashi, 1989; Oka, 2010; Uragami et al., 2009). Although compost application has had variable effects on the populations of plant-parasitic nematodes, the population dynamics of P. penetrans under compost applicat ion remain unresolved (Nakasono, 1992; Oka, 2010). In 2002, a cont inuous compost applicat ion experiment was initiated in a cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata L.) field at Tsukuba Vegetable Research Station, National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science, Japan. Cabbage is known to be a good host of P. penetrans, with high nematode population densities only minimally reducing cabbage growth (Miller, 1978; Olthof and Potter, 1973).
