Age-related diseases are becoming an economic burden to society due to the global population aging. Search for new diagnostic tools and therapies is thus of the highest priority. Modern, large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified over 20 risk genes related to late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Consecutive step would be to find the link between these risk genes and their impact on pathology and development of the disease. Imaging genomics is an emerging scientific discipline that integrates genetic research with neuroimaging, which has already brought encouraging results. For instance, risk genes were shown to be associated with the thickness of the cerebral cortex and brain activity primarily in cingulate, hippocamal, temporal and frontal areas, both in AD patients and in healthy population. Further progress in this field may help to identify new functional biomarkers of Alzheimer?s disease.
