The following article presents a proposal of teaching where the balance is used as an educational resource for learning the linear equations. The aim of the study was to promote understanding of the concept of linear equation with one unknown and linear equation with two variables with first grade students of secondary, using manipulatives. This study take as reference the cognitive focus based on the registers of semiotic representation from Raymond Duval and the designed activities promote the articulation of the registers of representation: verbal, tabular, graphic and algebraic. The working methodology was the case study, by the nature of work to study cases were pairs of students. With the use of the balance as instrument of link is achieved the direct conversion and reciprocal between the algebraic and graphical representation registers. Based on the analysis results it found that the balance was a valuable resource to achieve a positive impact on learning of the notion of linear equation with one unknown and two variables.
