In Brazil and worldwide, chronic non-communicable diseases are the health problem with the greatest impact on population morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular diseases are the most frequent causes of death in many countries, accounting for 31.8% of deaths from chronic diseases in Brazil. 1-4 From 1980 to 2012, there was a progressive decline in mortality rates from ischemic heart disease and cerebrovascular disease for the total population and by sex in Brazil.
