Symeon, disciple of John of Antioch, who was also a stylite, climbed his first pillar when he was six years old; afterwards he climbed another higher pillar and, at the age of twenty, he finally settled into the isolated and difficulty accessible Admirable Mount. In spite of it he was always surrounded by monks and visitors. In the anonymous Life, dated c. 600 AD, the monks of the nearest monastery, astonished by Symeon’s asceticism and judging themselves as ignorant in spiritual subjects, asked him for “the aids of the resources for the salvation” (chap. 26). Symeon says sixteen times “the monk’s pride is...”, and the last one he says “crown and pride of the monk is...” (chap. 27). The list and justification of practices and virtues, which captivates the listeners, constitutes for us a “life rule”. Here, this rule is detailed and compared with the so called saint Basil’s Rule, saint Anthony’s Rule and saint Pachomius’ Rule. However, Symeon proposes a practice of personal asceticism, not a communal organization.
