Public health efforts are reliant on the dissemination of accurate scientific and medical information. Furthermore, open dialogue amongst researchers, policymakers, practitioners and the public can support the generation, dissemination, and use of scientific and medical findings. Information must be made readily available, accessible and usable if it is to support their informed decision making and efficacious action. However, access to health information can be stymied when faulty assumptions and expectations lead to a mismatch between the information provided to the public, and their skills and abilities. We know, from the repeated waves of adult literacy surveys undertaken in many industrialized nations, that significant numbers of adults in all participating nations have difficulty in using readily available materials to accomplish everyday tasks with accuracy and consistency.1 Recently, similar findings have been reported in Asian and African countries where health literacy measures were developed.2,3 Studies suggest that people with lower literacy skills are more likely to be residing in underresourced areas, under-employed, poor, older adults and/or members of a minority group. Also, analyses indicate that this confluence of lower skills and marginalization may contribute to health disparities, which may worsen the double burden in low-income countries that struggle with high prevalence of communicable as well as chronic diseases.4
