本研究は, 女性に肯定される助産所出産体験に含まれる概念因子を明らかにすることを目的とした, 質的記述研究である。1か所の助産所において1986年から1999年にかけて出産した175名の女性が, 出産後に自らの出産体験について自由記載した手記を内容分析した。分析の結果, 171名の女性が肯定的な出産体験を記していた。概念因子としては, 4つのカテゴリーと23のサブカテゴリーが帰納的に抽出された。これらの意味内容から, 女性は出産時の感覚に基づく知的作用で, 出産という心身の変化にある自分自身や女性を支えている周囲の人びとの存在, そして分娩進行そのものを深く認識している状況が明らかになった。このような出産という体験から直接得た知識である知覚知を伴う出産体験を支えるためには, 医学的管理の対象として扱うだけでなく, 人間同士の親密なかかわりである人間的なケアと出産環境の必要性が示唆された。
