The aim of this study was to verify if the use of low level laser was effective for the treatment of painful symptoms in military patients with temporomandibular disorders. The evaluation of temporomandibular disorder was performed using the research instrument Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD), which was applied to 163 servicemen aged between 19 and 25 years old. The servicemen diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder were subjected to two group: laser therapy (G1) or placebo (G2). A gallium arsenide laser with a wavelength of 808nm, an output power of 100 mW, and a dose of 4 J/cm2 was used. The protocol of application of active laser and placebo laser was of 3 sessions per week for 4 weeks, totaling 12 sessions, with a 40-second runtime on each application point. The laser was applied in the regions of referred pain as well as certain points on the masseter muscle, temporal muscle, and temporomandibular joint. The Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was applied before and at the end of the experimental protocol. The statistical analysis was performed in the R program, with a 5% significance level. Statistically, a significant recovery (p<0.05) of patients with painful symptoms can be seen after the 12 sessions of laser applications on the laser therapy condition (G1). It can be concluded that the use of low power laser in servicemen with temporomandibular disorder was effective to reduce painful symptoms.
