RESUME : Cet article explore le potentiel de l’ontologie et de l’ingenierie ontologique pour augmenter l’intelligence dans les environnements de formation a distance, ainsi que dans la conception de ces environnements. Il contient une introduction a l’ontologie avec ses origines dans la philosophie occidentale, une discussion des relations entre l’intelligence artificielle et l’ingenierie ontologique, suivie d’une description des methodologies et des outils d’ingenierie ontologique. Plusieurs pistes d’exploitation du potentiel des ontologies pour les environnements de formation a distance sont explorees.  MOTS CLES : Ontologie, ingenierie ontologique, formation a distance  ABSTRACT : How is Ontology relevant to Distance Education? This article claims that ontology and ontological engineering have a potential to increase intelligence both in the learning environments for distance education, and in the process of designing them. An introduction to the origins of the concept of ontology in western philosophy is presented, as well as a discussion on the relationships between artificial intelligence and ontological engineering, followed by a description of methodologies and tools for ontological engineering.
