In tegenstelling tot vroegere opvattingen, zelfs van de schrijver van onderhavige studie, hebben het vroegmiddeleeuwse agrarisch landschap en zijn struktuur in de streek van Gent, waarvan enkele fundamentele trekken door een aantal karolingische teksten kunnen worden belicht, grondige veranderingen ondergaan in de loop van de XIIe-XIIIe eeuw. Vooral het uitzicht van de reeds in kultuur gebrachte gronden werd vereenvoudigd en eenvormiger gemaakt door de verdwijning van de talrijke kleine zgn. "akkers" die aan het vroegmiddeleeuwse landschap een discontinu karakter hadden gegeven. Dit gebeurde door hun opslorping en hergroepering in en rondom een groot, van dan af "kouter" genoemd onderdeel van het akkerland, waarvan het open karakter door dwingende kollektive dienstbaarheden tot op onze dagen vaak werd bewaard."The agricultural landscape in the Inner Flanders : its evolution between the IXth and the XIIIth centuries". In opposition to the opinions held hitherto, even by the author of this study, the landscape and agricultural structure of the higher Middle Ages in the Gent area, of which some Carlovingian texts give us a few fundamental features, were rather deeply altered through the XIIth and XIIIth centuries. This transformation consisted mostly in simplifying and unifying the outlook of the land already tilled at that time, through the disppearance of the multiplicity of quarters (akker) and their discontinuity which were characteristic of the rural countryside in the higher Middle Ages. It resulted in a re-grouping and re-allocating of the ground within and around a great "couture" (lat. cultura, Dutch kouter), half-seigniorial, half-peasant, whose open character was kept, thanks to collective constraints, up to a recent period.Contrairement aux opinions défendues jusqu'à présent, même par l'auteur du présent article, le paysage et la structure agraires du haut moyen âge dans la région de Gand, dont quelques textes carolingiens permettent de saisir certains traits fondamentaux, ont été transformés de manière assez profonde au cours des XIIème et XIIIème siècles. Cette transformation a principalement simplifié et uniformisé l'aspect des terres déjà mises en culture à ce moment, en faisant disparaftre la multiplicité des quartiers (akker) et leur discontinuité qui caractérisaient le paysage rural du haut moyen âge. Elle a abouti à un regroupement et un remembrement des terres à l'intérieur et autour d'une grande couture (lat. cultura, néerl. kouter), mi-seigneuriale, mi-paysanne, dont le caractère ouvert, grâce à des contraintes collectives, a été conservé jusqu'à une époque récente.Verhulst Adriaan.
