L'identité nationaliste hindoue semble s'être construite et développée comme une idéologie, sur le mode du «syncrétisme stratégique»: confrontés à un Autre doté d'une force et/ou d'un prestige supérieurs, les hindous de haute caste ont voulu réhabiliter leur culture en la réformant ; ils ont cherché à importer les traits culturels auxquels était attribuée la supériorité des agresseurs tout en prétendant revenir aux sources de leur Tradition pour légitimer ces emprunts. Cette hypothèse se trouve corroborée dans la longue durée par les mouvements de réforme socio-religieuse nés au 19e siècle de la confrontation avec les missions chrétiennes, par le premier parti nationaliste hindou, la Hindu Mahasabha, relancé dans les années 1920 en réaction au militantisme pan-islamique de la minorité musulmane, par le Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), apparu dans les mêmes circonstances et par la Vishva Hindu Parishad, fondée en 1964 pour lutter contre les prosélytismes chrétien et musulman.Strategic syncretism and the construction of the Hindu nationalist identity Hindu nationalist identity appears to have been built and developed as an ideology on the mode of "strategic syncretism " : faced with an Other of superior force or prestige, high-caste Hindus wanted to rehabilitate their culture by reforming it. They sought to import the cultural traits to which the " aggressors " superiority was attributed while claiming to return to the sources of their Tradition so as to legitimize such borrowings. This hypothesis is corroborated, when one examines a long period, by the social-religious reform movements, born in the 19th century from confrontation with the Christian missions, by the first Hindu nationalist party, the Hindu Mahasabha, relaunched in the 1920s in réaction to the panislamic militantism of the Muslim minority, by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which appeared under identical circumstances, and by the Vishva Hindu Parishad, founded in 1964 to fight against Christian and Muslim proselytizing.Jaffrelot Christophe.
