King and priest and Prester John : analysis of the Life of a 12th century Ethiopian king, Yemreḥanna Krestos ; The Ethiopian king Yemreḥanna Krestos is sometimes identified as the Prester John in the academic works. He reigned in the 12th century and, according to the hagiographical text dedicated to him, he was considered as a priest as well as a monarch by his own subjects. This article is an attempt to explain why this identification is not convincing although the hagiography of this King and some texts related to the myth of Prester John seem to derive from the same sources, i. e. the apocalyptic texts written in Egypt after the 7th century and translated into ge’ez. The study mainly focuses on the priesthood of King Yemreḥanna Krestos in order to explain why he was considered as such by his own hagiographer. The use of the apocalyptic texts of Egyptian origin is one of the explanations, showing that in the 15th century (date of composition of the Life of Yemreḥanna Krestos), the Ethiopians recognized themselves in the prophecies dealing with the last Christian Emperor and the final victory of the antichalcedonian party. Some of these elements played also a role in the building of the Prester John figure. Despite these common sources, there is a contradiction between the Ethiopian texts and their Egyptian sources : the struggle against Islam is totally forgotten in the Ethiopian texts. The myth of the Prester John is not depending on the figure of King Yemreḥanna Krestos, but this myth and the Life of Yemrehanna Krestos were influenced by the same sources.Le roi éthiopien Yemreḥanna Krestos est parfois identifié au Prêtre Jean dans les travaux scientifiques. Ce souverain régnait au XIIe siècle et était considéré par ses propres sujets, d’après les actes qui lui ont été consacrés, comme un prêtre et un roi. Cet article tente de montrer que l’identification de Yemreḥanna Krestos avec le Prêtre Jean n’est pas convaincante même si la Vie de ce saint roi et certains textes qui servirent de source au mythe du Prêtre Jean semblent dériver de sources communes, les textes apocalyptiques rédigés en Égypte après le VIIe siècle et traduits en ge’ez plus tard. Cette étude se concentre sur la prêtrise du roi Yemreḥanna Krestos, afin de comprendre pourquoi son hagiographe insiste sur cette qualité si peu courante pour un souverain. L’emploi des textes apocalyptiques venant d’Égypte est l’une des explications, soulignant comment au XVe siècle (époque à laquelle la Vie de Yemreḥanna Krestos fut composée), les Éthiopiens se reconnaissaient dans les prophéties qui identifiaient le roi d’Éthiopie comme le dernier empereur chrétien et celui qui réunirait tous les chrétiens autour de l’orthodoxie pré-chalcédonienne. Certains de ces éléments ont certes joué un rôle dans la construction de l’image du Prêtre Jean. Mais en dépit de ces sources communes, une contradiction majeure oppose les textes éthiopiens influencés par les apocalypses égyptiennes et ces dernières : la lutte contre l’islam est totalement oubliée dans les textes éthiopiens. Le mythe du Prêtre Jean ne peut donc pas s’être fondé sur la figure du roi Yemreḥanna Krestos, mais ce mythe, tout comme la Vie de Yemreḥanna Krestos ont puisé aux mêmes sources.Derat Marie-Laure.
