International audienceThis paper aims to show when and where occurred the syntactic change which led from the word order "Verb + Object + negation + Resultative postverb" (here "V O Nég v", ex : shuō tā bú guò, prevailing during the Tang period, to the present Pekingese word order "Verb + negation + Resultative postverb + Object" (here "V Neg v О, ex : shuōbuguò tā). While both orders are met in 'baihua' literature of Ming times, we argue-through an investigation of Tang, Song, and Yuan texts-that the present Pekingese word order was the only attested one in the Northern dialect as early as the Yuan period ; the older word order "V 0 Neg v", however, is still very common in many Southern dialects, which accounts for the coexistence of "V 0 Neg v" and "V Neg v 0" in Ming texts. This word order change is linked to the one that occuring later in corresponding affirmative constructions. The significance of both changes lies in the fact that Modern Pekingese is thus provided with two distinct structures unambiguous as for resultative and potential meaning, while the previous constructions were basically resultative, and acquired a potential reading only in some restricted contexts.Nous souhaitons tirer au clair ici un point précis d'histoire du chinois vernaculaire : quand et où s'est opéré le changement d'ordre des constituants dans les constructions du type [shuō tā bú guò] vers les constructions potentielles du type [shuōbuguò tā] "ne pas avoir le dernier mot sur lui, ne pas arriver à l'emporter sur lui dans une discussion". En effet, c'est cette dernière tournure qui est la norme en langue standard, fondée sur le pékinois, l'objet "ta" est situé après la forme potentielle "shuobuguo" "ne pas parvenir à prendre le dessus dans une joute verbale". Mais dans des stades antérieurs de la langue vernaculaire, telle que la reflètent des romans comme le Shui Hu Zhuan "Au bord de l'eau", l'objet "ta" était souvent inséré entre le verbe principal et la négation. Cet ordre archaïque en langue standard reste vigoureux dans plusieurs dialectes méridionaux contemporains. Il est donc indispensable, pour éclaircir ce point d'histoire (quand s'est produite l'unification en "shuobuguo ta", ordre actuel du pékinois), de ne pas oublier la dimension de la variation dialectale.Nous montrons grâce à l'examen de divers documents reflétant le chinois vernaculaire et son évolution que ce changement illustre une plus vaste réorganisation du système grammatical du chinois visant à donner à la distinction sémantique entre potentiel et accompli - repérable auparavant grâce au contexte - une expression syntaxique dénuée d'ambiguïté
