Michela Bussotti Jeux de tables Le Yanji tu, livre sans texte d'« image en action » ? Le Yanji tu, attribué à Huang Во'en (1079-1118), comporte une préface datée de 1195 et des postfaces écrites en 1347 et en 1504, qui nous relatent sa transmission pendant la dynastie des Yuan et le début des Ming. En 1511, il a été publié dans le recueil Xinshang bian, dont les réimpressions successives, à la fin des Ming, ont inclus des compléments de plus en plus nombreux. Cet article traite du corpus principal du Xinshang bian, portant sur des objets appréciés par les lettrés, mais aussi sur certains jeux pratiqués à l'époque. Les images imprimées de ce recueil sont des images « utiles » pour nous documenter sur les thèmes traités, mais elles ont, au moins pour certaines, la spécificité de nous informer sur des activités, les jeux, n'ayant pas d'« utilité » concrète. Le Yanji tu est formé d'une série de schémas, à propos de la disposition de tables rectangulaires, et le rôle des mots y est très marginalisé. L'ouvrage est considéré comme la première monographie sur les tables pour des réunions conviviales ; il donne des indications très précises sur les dimensions des meubles à arranger et à composer l'un avec l'autre. Les dispositions de sept tables sont expliquées par des schémas : on ne peut ignorer l'aspect abstrait et géométrique de ces tu. Du fait de ces caractéristiques, le Yanji tu ainsi que le Dieji pu, un ouvrage plus tardif sur un sujet similaire, ont été mis en relation avec le développement de casse-tête et jeux mathématiques des époques plus récentes, comme les tangrams.Michela Bussotti Table games The Yanji tu, a book without text of "images in action "? The Yanji tu, ascribed to Huang Bo'en (1079-1118), includes an introduction dated to 1195 and two colophons of 1347 and 1504 explaining its merits and its transmission during the Yuan dynasty and the early Ming dynasty. It was published in 1511 in a collection of works, the Xinshang bian, which was reprinted a number of times in the late Ming. These new editions included an increasing number of sections in the collection, but this article deals only with the principal set. Xinshang bian treats of scholarly subjects, but also of ancient games. Thus the woodcuts of this collection are certainly "useful", in that they afford us with information about the topics of each section, but some of them have the particular function of illustrating activities, games and playing, that are not concretely "useful". Yanji tu is composed of a set of drawings that show the arrangement of seven rectangular tables, and the textual space is really reduced in the book. This work is considered as the oldest monograph about tables for convivial meetings; it offers precise instructions concerning the dimensions of the tables that are to be arranged. One cannot fail to notice that the pictures have been drawn in a very geometrical and abstract style. For this reason, the Yanji tu and the Diejipu - a later book about a similar subject -, have been connected with the development of more recent puzzles and mathematical games, such as tangrams.Bussotti Michela.
