Aiming to contribute to the understanding of the concept of health equity, this study carefully examines the notion of information access and its boundaries and limits in the context of social determinants of health and their interaction with public policy. From this point of view, this text addresses the advocacy practices of patient organizations in the field of oncology and the impact of new information and communication technologies (ICTs) that bring non-professionalknowledge as an expression of the "social production of scientific knowledge" in the context of the XXI century.Com o objetivo de somar contribuição à ideia de equidade em saúde busca-se um olhar cuidadoso sobre a concepção de acesso à informação, com suas fronteiras e limites, para concebê-la no contexto dos Determinantes Sociais da Saúde e em sua interlocução com políticas públicas. É através dessas lentes que o presente texto se volta às práticas de ativismo das organizações de pacientes na esfera da oncologia, impactadas por novas tecnologias de informação e comunicação (TICs), para trazer o conhecimento leigo como forma de expressão da “produção social do conhecimento científico” na moldura do século XXI
