In this work, analytical methodologies were developed for the determination of mercury concentrations and their species in water, sediment, plankton and fish samples from Caño Alpargatón and in the marine-coastal zone of Golfo Triste, Venezuela. The physicochemical parameters and nutrients in water and sediments were determined. The detection limit found for total Hg was 0.013 μg Hg L-1. In the past, a Chloride-Alcali Plant was located in that area, which discharged inorganic mercury. The total mercury concentrations in water were A rtíc u lo d e In v e s ig a c ió n C ie n c ia s Q u ím ic a s MSc. Jenifer Smith et al. 18 between 0.26 and 0.53 μg Hg L, which are below the permissible limit for drinking water. However, concentrations between 14.5 and 453.5 μg Hg kg were found in sediments. For the determination of the mercury species, a methodology was used using HPLC-ICP-MS for the species Hg + and MeHg with methanol, ammonium acetate, EDTA and mercaptoethanol as mobile phase in reverse phase with a C18 column. The limits of detection were for the MeHg 0.7 μg Hg L and for Hg of 0.53 μg Hg L. Mobilization of Hg concentrations was observed in sediment samples in Caño Alpargatón, with MeHg as the species with the highest concentrations. The highest concentrations of Hg in the littoral zone in sediments were concentrated near the discharge of the Caño Alpargatón, with high concentrations of MeHg, while in the fish samples the concentrations of MeHg and Hg were close.
