Modern psychological studies suggest that the success of an adult in modern society is determined not only by academic knowledge and skills and the level of general intelligence (IQ), but also by the ability to manage both their emotional state and the emotional states of other people (EQ). People with a high level of emotional intelligence have a pronounced ability to manage the emotional sphere which leads to strong adaptability and efficiency in communication. Despite this, in a modern Russian school still largely focuses on students’ cognitive development, while a child’s emotional life and the ability to build relationships with other people are given insufficient attention. The article identifies and argues organizational and pedagogical conditions for the development of schoolchildren’s emotional intelligence. The author describes the program of formation and development of students' emotional intelligence in the educational process, carried out at school No. 89 of Kalininsky district of St Petersburg in the framework of the federal innovation platform, the primary results of its testing and implementation (the increase in the proportion of students showing high EQ, the increase in the level of students empathy, the increase in the ability to empathize, focus on others, the tendency to join others, the increase in sensitivity to the feelings of other people and a better understanding of the consequences of their behavior; the improvement of the moral and psychological atmosphere in the classroom and the development of communication skills among students). The key idea of our research is to help students master the basic educational program through the formation of their emotional intelligence skills, which are the most important components of a successful personality of the 21st century. In our opinion, emotional education is a fundamentally new element of the system of the qualitative change of modern Russian education. The emphasis is placed on 4 components of emotional intelligence: (1) understanding one’s own emotions; (2) selfmanagement (including stress management); (3) understanding other people (including empathy); (4) managing other people’s emotions and relationships.
