A person’s experience of his/her life’s most difficult situation is closely connected with its subjective assessment and objective characteristics that can have a significant impact on the perception of the situation and can contribute to or hinder the process of adaptation to the situation. The tension and the severity of an experienced life situation can affect coping behavior differently. This topic becomes particularly important in the context of the upbringing of children who suffer from cancer because the parent-child relationship can be an important resource for the child and can have a significant impact on the child's emotional state. At the same time the parent-child relationship is an important indicator of a child’s socio-psychological adaptation to the illness and treatment process. The purpose of the study is to examine the characteristics of parent-child interaction of mothers and their coping strategies at different stages of a child's cancer. Materials and methods: 24 women aged 28 to 60, raising children suffering from cancer aged 4 to 18. Group No. 1 (n=13) comprises mothers with children at the stage of cancer remission; group No. 2 (n=11) – at the stage of relapse. The following techniques were used: PARI, Lazarus coping strategies technique modified by L. I. Wasserman, the author's biographical questionnaire. We have concluded that mothers' parental attitudes depend on the characteristics of coping behavior at the stage of remission and at the stage of relapse of a child’s cancer. A more harmonious style of parent-child interaction in each group is correlated with a more constructive style of maternal coping behavior. Parent-child interaction is more correlated with the characteristics of maternal coping behavior at the stage of relapse (30 relationships) than at the stage of remission (14 relationships). The relapse of a child’s cancer in comparison with the stage of remission is closely linked with a closer interaction of parental attitudes regarding excessive focus on the child and family relationships. These relationships can be considered being the most vulnerable during this period, and the constructive coping behavior will contribute to a more optimal parent-child interaction and attitude to the family role in general.
