Today, the integrative approach in psychological studies of the human inner and outer worlds is becoming increasingly popular. The study of the connection between one’s life strategy, life orientation and subjective ideas about oneself, allows us to focus on the integration of external and internal factors affecting the choice of an individual life path. The way an individual organises his/her own life in terms of the lifestyle, in other words, actualises the knowledge about him/herself, is closely connected to the peculiarities of a person's life path. In this research, we study the characteristics of self-perception of individuals with different types of life orientation. The study involved 332 people, in particular the 1–4 year students studying engineering or humanities at St Petersburg State Marin Technical University. We assume that the respondents of the sample have similar self-perception concepts, yet, there are differences in personal identification in the framework of different types of their life orientations. We applied E. Y. Korzhova’s methodology “Questionnaire of Life Orientation” to determine the life orientation type of the respondents. This methodological tool allows us to reveal the special features of life organisation depending on an individual’s dominant external or internal features. In order to differentiate the knowledge respondents get about themselves through self-identification process, they were offered to use E. Y. Korzhova’s method called “The Psychological Portraits”. The questionnaire contains 30 statements describing psychological types of a personality. The respondents were asked to choose the type of psychological portraits according to their self-perception. They also rated each type of psychological portraits on a 10-point scale depending on its accuracy. As a result, we received psychological portraits, characterising our sample group, and found out the differences in choices of the psychological portraits connected to the type of respondents’ life orientation. These differences can be explained by the features of students' self-identification: the selfimage is closely related to the existing type of life orientation, life descriptive characteristics, and features of the organisation of their life.
