We review a recent theoretical proposal for a universal quantum computingplatform based on tunable nonlinear electromechanical nano-oscillators, inwhich qubits are encoded in the anharmonic vibrational modes of mechanicalresonators coupled to a superconducting circuitry. The digital quantumsimulation of spin-type model Hamiltonians, such as the Ising model in atransverse field, could be performed with very high fidelities on such aprospective platform. Here we challenge our proposed simulator with the actualIBM-Q quantum processor available on cloud. We show that such state-of-artimplementation of a quantum computer, based on transmon qubits andsuperconducting technology, is able to perform digital quantum simulations.However, encoding the qubits in mechanical degrees of freedom would allow tooutperform the current implementations in terms of fidelity and scalability ofthe quantum simulation.
