We employ the recently introduced generalized microcanonical inflection pointmethod for the statistical analysis of phase transitions in flexible andsemiflexible polymers and study the impact of the bending stiffness upon thecharacter and order of transitions between random-coil, globules, andpseudocrystalline conformations. The high-accuracy estimates of themicrocanonical entropy and its derivatives required for this study wereobtained by extensive replica-exchange Monte Carlo simulations. We observe thatthe transition behavior into the compact phases changes qualitatively withincreasing bending stiffness. Whereas the $\Theta$ collapse transition is lessaffected, the first-order liquid-solid transition characteristic for flexiblepolymers ceases to exist once bending effects dominate over attractivemonomer-monomer interactions.
