We thank Moseley and Wilkinson (1) fortheir response to our article (2). Our aimwas to contrast mechanisms of auditoryverbal hallucination (AVH) to spur exper-imental work pitting models against eachother,andweoutlinedexperimentalstrate-gies to do so. While we favor a sponta-neous activation model of AVH, differentmodels might be needed to explain thepanoplyofAVHphenomenology(3).Here,we reconsider self-monitoring approachesthat identify inner speech as the substrateof AVH.We agree with Moseley and Wilkin-son that inner speech is complex, in partbecause the term“inner speech”covers dif-ferent phenomena. In a broad sense, itrefers to a family of internal experiences ofspeech including (1) auditory imaginationof one’s own or another’s speech and (2)internal articulation of one’s own thoughtsin words [cf. (4); for potential distinctionsin neural basis, see e.g., Ref. (5)].
