Halaban wood charcoal can be used as raw materials for making alternative carbon active because wood charcoal contained 85-90% of carbon. Activated carbon made from wood charcoal using the physically methods of activation by heating at high temperature and chemically methods by soaking in a chemical solution. The purpose of this research to learn and analyze the influence in addition of ZnCl2 and KOH, heating temperature, immersion time activation against the characteristics of activated carbon, as well as learning the adsorbtion ability of activated carbon for methylene blue. The variables are the immersion time of ZnCl2 (12 hours) and KOH (12 hours). The results of this research indicate that the activator combination will produce high surface area of activated carbon. And also, the higher heating temperature and the longer of the immersion time of wood charcoal, then the adsorption more efficient. The best condition to make an activated carbon which the heating temperature in 600°C, the activator combination with the immersion time of ZnCl2 12 hours, followed by 12 hours of KOH with ZnCl2 0,09% dan KOH 0,05% (w/v). The surface area of activated carbon are 358,67 m2/g with the moisture content of 13%, and ash content of 12,7%.
