In-wheel direct-drive motors are directly connected to the wheels of electric vehicles. They therefore reduce mechanical loss in gears, achieve high degree of performance control, and make efficient use of car interior space. However, in-wheel direct-drive motors need to be robust and have a high degree of resistance to heat. The motors also need to be in expensive because more motors are fitted than in conventional piston-driven cars. Switched reluctance (SR) motors have many advantages such as their simple and solid construction, low-cost manufacturing, higher efficiency, and excellent reliability at high temperatures. These features make them suitable for in-wheel direct-drive vehicles. We evaluated the attributes of 12/16 SR motors and 24/32 SR motors for an in-wheel motor driven electric bus using the finite element method.
