Johannes Gerloff’s doctorate thesis was on the variability of Chlamydomonas cultures (Gerloff 1940). In 1944 Johannes Gerloff published first studies on diatoms in the TEM, being a pioneer in the application of this technique in diatom research (Gerloff & Gölz 1944). As Curator of the Algae Herbarium at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum BerlinDahlem, BGBM (since 1956) and Director and Professor at the BGBM (1972-1979, see Fig. 1), he was involved in several volumes of an iconography of diatoms, depicted by means of electron microscopy “Diatomeenschalen im elektronenmikroskopischen Bild” (Gerloff & Helmcke 1974, 1977). Gerloff’s second focus was on the continuation of W. Krieger’s works on desmids, especially Cosmarium (Krieger & Gerloff 1962-1969). A third focus was on marine and limnic macroalgae, the latter were included by him and co-workers into the first Red List of Algae of the Federal Republic of Germany (Friedrich et al. 1984) and locally of Berlin-West (Geissler & Gerloff 1982). Beside his research, Johannes Gerloff spent most of his time to facilitate research and communication in science. Johannes Gerloff, besides F. Mattick, was one of the founders of Nova Hedwigia, a start-up of an International Journal on Algae, Fungi, Lichens and Mosses (Mattick & Gerloff 1959-1966, Mattick et al. 1966-1983). He was leading in the reestablishment of Pascher’s Süßwasserflora (Fig. 2, 3) and remained as one of its editor until his death (e.g. Ettl 1978, 1983, Krammer & Lange-Bertalot 1986, 1988, 1991a, b). Besides his editorial work, Johannes Gerloff was an academic teacher in a broad sense. He supervised doctorate theses such as L. H. Baumann (1979), O. O. Parra Barrientos (1979) and P. Rivera Ramirez (1981), and cooperated with scientists from the Eastern Bloc (such as H. Ettl), from South Africa (B. J. Cholnoky) as well as from developing
