Even though most natural salt marshes and saline waters becamein the CR extinct, halophilous diatoms still survive in czechrunning waters. In 2006 two remarkable diatoms Pleurosiralaevis and Bacillaria paxillifera, appeared in river stretches,where halophilous diatoms do not normally occur. Well developedpopulations of the first species occupied the bottom of theBilina River. This is its first record from the CR. The secondspecies was found in Ostravice, Odra, Labe and Jizera Rivers.For the last time this peculiar diatom was observed in the CRin 1960ies.
