We summarize the results from the ZEUS experiment on D meson production in deep inelastic scattering using HERA I data and preliminary results on D∗± production using HERA II data. Single differential cross sections have been measured as a function of Q, x, and the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the D meson. These measurements are compared to the prediction of next-to-leading-order QCD. Furthermore, the open charm contribution, F cc̄ 2 , to the proton structure function, F2, has been extracted from the data.
