The toxicological effects of Hijiki (Hizikia fusiforme) extract, which contains a high level of arsenic, were studied in comparison with those of arsenic trioxide in rats for 6 months. Seven groups of rats (Sprague-Dawley, female) were used: one was a control, three were given Hijiki extract (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0mg As/rat/every second day), and three were given arsenic trioxide (the same doses of As as in the case of Hijiki extract).The growth rate was slightly accelerated by the administration of Hijiki extract, and neither death nor evident histological, hematological or biochemical changes were observed in any rat of the Hijiki extract groups. There was no histopathological finding except for slight anemia in the arsenic trioxide group.Arsenic concentrations in organs and tissues of rats were determined by the silverdiethyldithiocarbamate (Ag-DDTC) method. The arsenic concentrations were generally higher in the arsenic trioxide group than in the Hijiki extract groupat a given dose of As. The excretion of arsenic in urine and feces was determined 24, 48 and 96hrs after an administration of Hijiki extract or arsenic trioxide (2.0mg As/rat in both groups); 63.2% of administered As in the Hijiki extract group, but only 31.0% of administered As in the arsenic trioxide group, was excreted in 96hrs. These results suggest that the biodynamic behavior of As in Hijiki extract is different from that of As in arsenic trioxide.
