Inter-species differences in the acclimation strategy of the nutr~tional processes (ingestion, drgestive enzyme activity) of female and copepodite stage V copepods were established experimentally For 3 different species Acar t~a clausl, Eurytemora herdman), and Drepanopuspect~natus In all expennlents food was supplied over 4 to 7 d at 2 limltlng concentrations of the cultured diatom Skeletonema costaturn The first 3 expenments confirmed earller results suggesting that under food l~mlting conditions 4cartia-type copepods (low level of energy reserve, high turnover of its biomass) dlsplayed positlve acclimatlon of both lngestlon rate and dlgestlve system Under the expenmental condltions used, both A rlausl and E herdrnani requlred 48 h to slgnlficantly acclimate the11 digestive actlvlty to changes in food -atlon exceeding 1 pg C copepod-' Smaller but sustained dlfferences in food ration could result in simiar behaviour but seem to r equre a longer tlme penod to show sigmtlcant acchmatlon Desplte larger food cations expenments with the I~pld-rich specles D pec t~na tus failed to show any acclimation of dlgestlve enzyme activities, except for lndivlduals collected before a summer bloom whlch dlsplayed partial posihve accllmation of their trypsin actlvlty These ~nter-species dlfferences agree w ~ t h the hypothesis that internal control of the accllmation process IS governed by the metabolic requirement of the animals In add~tion the difterential response of D pectinatus collected before and after a phytoplankton bloom suggests an Important role for past feedlng condltions (phys~ological memory), thus explaining the :tariability in responses between natural fleld conditions and laboratory condltions Physiological adaptation 1s proposed as a mechan~sm which minimizes the effect of stressful trophlc condltions
