A numeric technique developed by Williams et al. (1991) has been used to investigate and demonstrate the value of the approach for revealing mangrove zonation patterns in a complex data set from the Endeavour River in northeastern Australia. As part of the enquiry, it has been shown that species sequences are not constant along the river and that some clustering is evident \nth vanable levels of affinity between the species within individual clusters Also, statistical analysis has shown that there is a significant trend, as one moves upriver, for the species to position themselves closer to the water's edge. It appears likely that the procedure adopted may be useful in similar situations in mangroves elsewhere and perhaps in other types of fixed communities where zonation may be present but is not obvious.
