Surface nlicrolayers collected in the northwestern hdediterranean Sea showed significant enrichment of particulate organic carbon (POC), ATP, chlorophyll, rnurarnic acid (a specific bacterial biornass indicator) and total and viable bacterial count. Mean enrichment factors for murarnic acid (52.6) and total bacterial count (38.4) were clearly higher than that for chlorophyll (19.8) Although phytoand bactenoneuston appeared to have lower ATP levels, particularly In braclush water areas, compared with plankton, the bactenoneuston exhlblted higher viabhty than bactenoplankton found in the corresponding underlylng waters. Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Electron Transport Systems (ETS) measurements clearly showed enhanced respiratory acitvltles (up to 765.1 ~ t l O2 1-l h-') in the microlayers compared to underlying bulk waters Data cornpanson between BOD, ETS, POC, salinity and m~crobiomass estlrnates suggests that the measured respiratory achvities (BOD and ETS) were well associated with bacterial populations in both the rn~crolayer and bulk waters.
