S i n k ~ n g p a r t ~ c u l a t e material was collected d ~ ~ e c t l y uslng a particle collectorsystem in the sea a rea off Sanriku ( J a p a n ) in J u n e 1977 a n d May 1978. A serles of collectors w e r e se t for a day at the depth [range of 50-500 ni along a suspension lope h u n g from a surface buoy system. M a n y par-ticles collected were v ~ s i b l e to the naked e y e ; nilcloscopic obser \~a t ions revealed that more than 90 % of the par-t~cles above 125 pm In d ~ a m e t e r were e ~ t h e l fresh fecal pellets of zooplankton or dislntegl-ated loose clunips of posslble fecal orlgln. These partrcles c o n t a ~ n e d many skeletal remalns , e. g of diatoms T h e maximum vertical flux of t h e s ~ n k ~ n g p a r t ~ c l e s o b t a ~ n e d in 1978 w a s 418 mg C m->d ' at 100 m. This corresponds to a b o ~ ~ t o n e third the dally prlmdl-y p r o d u c t ~ o n In t h r euphotic layer above Below 100 m , the downwar-cl flux gradually drmin~s l ied to d level of 300 nig C nl L d' at 250 m.
