Heavy infection with Ichthyophonus in the viscera and gdls was revealed in 2 out of 86 examined grey mullet5 (Mugihdae) from Kowie lagoon. SE Cape province. Spores in the viscera were enclosed either by a epitheloid granuloma or by a fibrous capsule. In the gdk, spores infected the filament as well as the lamellae; spores invaded the lamellae via the capillaries. Walls of the large multinucleate spores consisted of longitudinally compressed microfibrils, superimposed by deposits of the host's cellular residues. This wall developed from a thin wall consisting of a non-fibrous electron dense layer of the small uninucleate spores. Spore endoplasm contained a variety of organelles, most of which occur also in phycomycete fungi. Nevertheless the revealed fine structure of the large multinucleate as well as the small uni and binucleate spores do not provide supportive evidence for the taxonomic position of Ichthyophonus among the fung
