In the context of neoliberal heritage governance, this article asks about heritagization and its social agents stressing the challenges, contradictions and contributions that participation means in these processes. Participatory patrimonial governance is situated within the tensions and paradoxes between the classical and constructivist paradigms of heritage and between the logics of participation as an emancipating project or as a neoliberal project. The paper exposes how heritage professionals face some contradictions and questions about participation related to their positions and in an particular heritage regimen. In addition, an approximation is made to the notions of heritage community and the paradoxes between essentialist and performative visions of community. Related to the determination of heritage community we propose epistemological subversions and openings linked to the participatory turn.
