The article discusses the state and problems of the relatively young in Russia branch of activity "Science communication", which is directly related to the problems of popularization and dissemination of knowledge. The topic of science communication is popular and actual today, it is distinguished by its multi-aspect and is reflected in a significant number of publications. The task of the author was to identify on the basis of large-scale bibliographic material the main trends characteristic of the selected subject area and supported, if possible, by relevant statistical data. Data on dynamics of development of communication function in different groups of the scientific and educational organizations are given. The reasons for the slower development of scientific communication in the group of research organizations in comparison with the University sector are discussed. The issue of training professional staff of scientific communicators is discussed. Finally, the author substantiates the need to improve the criteria for assessing the effectiveness of science communication in the direction of avoiding the formal criteria of KPI.
