Polymers accumulate in the environment due to low biodegradability. The world's oceans are turning into a huge dump of polymer waste, in which polymers can form microparticles, which are called “microplastics”. Microplastics can enter the environment directly, for example from polymer granules used in cosmetics, from clothing fibers that are formed during washing, as well as during mechanical degradation of polymeric materials.
