The present study has been directed mainly at finding an economical ion exchanger for removing Cs and Sr contained in radioactive waste. It was found by our experiments that the ion exchange capacity of aluminosilicate mineral is closely related to its crystal structure.The exchange character of clay mineral was the subject of layer-structure discussion in previous reports, and the present work concerns zeolitic taff possessing the three dimensional clay structure.The zeolitic taff from Shiroishi City, Miyagi Pref., consists of moldenite crystal and noncrystallized volcanic glass, and these components have different selectivity and exchange capacity. Pretreatment of the zeolitic taff modified its exchange capacity and selectivity, and this can be attributed to a change in its crystal structure and in some cases in its solid state conditions.Natural zeolitic taff was successfully applied to the decontamination of radioactive ions, and it was found that it has good selectivity, that is, high exchange capacity for Cs ions.
