Strength training has several health benefits, bringing positive adaptations in the cardiovascular system. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the acute responses of blood pressure in basic strength training exercises. The study was performed with 8 male strength training practitioners (21.4 ± 1.68 years) with at least 1 year of uninterrupted training, normotensive, in free squat and bench press exercises, and 1 RM tests were performed to determine the intensity. The patients underwent two tests, with a minimum of 48 hours between them. The first one was performed 3 sets of exercise bench press at 100% of 1 RM and in the second, 3 sets at 100% of 4 Revista Brasileira de Fisiologia do Exercício 2019;18(1):3-8 1 RM of exercise free squat. One week later they performed the same procedure with 80% of 1 RM. Blood pressure was measured before and immediately after the execution of each series. There was a statistically significant difference considering the changes in systolic arterial pressure (SAP) at 100% of 1 RM and 80% of 1 RM when comparing the SAP at rest in the free squat exercise and the acute responses at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd series. Regarding diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), no significant difference was observed in 100% and 80% of 1 RM values between rest DAP in the free squat exercise and the acute responses in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. These results point out to us how safe and beneficial training can be at higher intensities, and the study clarifies the functioning of blood pressure when the body is subjected to high loads, and it is possible to prescribe safe and adequate protocols within the fitness centers.
