Various corrosion phenomena at weldments in chemical plants are surveyed. Because of some peculiar properties of weldments to base metal some forms of corrosion easily occure in weldments.1) Residual stress by welding will lead to stress corrosion cracking. 2) Degradation of microstructure and segregation of chemical compositions at weld metals and heat affected zones will result in localized corrosion such as pitting corrosion or crevice corrosion. 3) Ununiform surface condition, existing of oxide layer and residual of slag by welding will accelerate corrosion of weldments. Thermal cycles by welding cause sensitization of stainless steel and lead to intergranular corrosion and intergranular stress corrosion cracking. Countermeasures against stress corrosion cracking and localized corrosion are given.
