DuringthemiddleoftheAtlanticperiodanoakforestrichinpinecoveredtheNorthernVosges.Firandbeechimmigratedatthe endoftheAtlanticleadingtothedeclineofoakandpineintheforest. Thisalsomarkedtheonsetofdecisivehumaninfluence onthedevelopmentoftheterrestrialvegetation.  Fivelandusephasesweredetected, thefirstoneattheendoftheNeolithicperiod (~4000-2200 B.C.). Subsequently,continuous landuseisevidentfromtheBronzeAge(2200-800 B.C.) uptonow. InthelateMiddleAges(A.D. 900-1500) andtheearlyMod- ernEra(sinceA.D. 1500), thewoodlandswerecompletelyalteredbyhumanactivities. Duringthe19 th centurymodernforestry introducedspruceintotheinvestigatedareaintheNorthernVosges.Spruceafforestationthenacceleratedinthemiddleofthe 20 th century.
