Many of the ideas which were used as the foundation for the program of action of the government of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, particularly in relation to Brazil (such as the economic exploitation of the Amazon and its effective occupation) and the religious (especially in the cooptation of the influence of the Jesuits in the colony), are found diluted among an endless number of texts from various genres (letters, speeches, inventories, denouncing pamphlets...), alluding immediately to an enlightened rhetoric, by no means cohorent, which ultimately shapes an anti-Jesuit ideology. Many of the laws which would be enforced in Maranhão and Grão-Pará had already been sketched, whether as simple ideias or as proposals, in his private and official correspondence. This article aims to analyse how, in the exchange of correspondence between Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo and the Duke Manuel Teles da Silva, the convergence of view points on the discussed issues made Teles become a sort of an ad hoc adviser on the Marquis of Pombal’s political strategies and how these enlightened ideias were used as a foundation for a government program in the Portuguese Amazon.
