Das Virus SARS-CoV-2 gehört zur Familie der Coronaviren und wurde im November 2019 erstmals in der Stadt Wuhan (China) entdeckt. Eine Infektion mit diesem Virus verursacht die Atemwegserkrankung COVID-19, die sich seit Januar 2020 auch außerhalb Chinas ausbreitet und schließlich die weltweite COVID-19-Pandemie auslöste. Von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) wurde die Situation am 30.01.2020 als „gesundheitliche Notlage von internationaler Tragweite“ und am 11. März 2020 als Pandemie eingestuft (s. Abb. 1).
